Eclectic Decor | A Quick Reference Guide
By JDLPick a Color Pallet
That is the easiest way to mix and match home goods together. You may have something antique and something modern next to each other. If the colors blend or compliment each other (cool tones, warm tones, monochromatic etc) it makes the pieces feel like they belong in the space.
Edit
You may like a lot of different things, that doesn't mean they should be all in the same room or even in the same house. If something doesn't work, colors, finishes, too elaborate, different style than everything else . .get rid of it. Too much stuff creates visual confusion. One wrong piece could throw a whole room off balance.
Make It Personal
If it means something too you, use it first. If it means little to you, remove it. Look for a piece to highlight, look at its colors, look at the shape, look at the texture. Use that as your inspiration to find other pieces that blend or compliment with it.
Focal Point
Select a focal point in your room and work your way away from that. Don't create multiple focal points. This goes back to visual confusion. If you have a Fireplace in the center of your room, it is the focal point so don't fight it. Start in that area with something that makes a statement and then work your way around the room.
Details
If an object has wonder colorful details, it creates visual interest. If too many objects are too detailed and colorful in a room, it creates visual chaos. Select things that you want to highlight in your space. Let those pieces shine without interruption. Other objects dont have to be less detailed, they just need to have a solid color so that the details and texture make them stand out in a subtle way.
Hope this helps you create a unique and personal space!
